Train Ride for Kids and Family
The Sugar Cane Train is a family train ride near the Kaanapali resort area on the west side of Maui. You begin your round trip at the north end of the tracks, at Puukolii Road and Honoapiilani Highway. It used to run to the south end in the town of Lahaina, but more recently only runs to Kaanapali.
At present, the Sugar Cane Train only runs around the holiday season from late November to the end of December each year. Before mid 2014 it used to run every day all year around. But there were some plans to bring it back to full-time use in 2019 according to an article in the Maui News.
This train used to carry sugar cane from the fields to the harbor. Since 1969 it carries tourists. The ride is about a half hour in each direction, but it’s only a 7-mile trip, with the train traveling at the leisurely speed of 12 miles per hour. Along the way, you have a view of the West Maui Mountains and the ocean, similar to the view you get when you drive the main highway that parallels the train tracks.
If your kids love the idea of riding on a train, or you are looking for something to keep the kids busy, you may enjoy it. Or see this link for other kids and family activities on Maui.
