Mala is a small restaurant in a gorgeous setting, with indoor and outdoor seating, right on the ocean, in the north end of Lahaina. It’s at 1307 Front Street, across the street from the Lahaina Cannery Mall, near the Old Lahaina Luau. Phone 808-667-9394.
Mala has some “first courses” (small plates), but most of the menu is full-size salads and entrees. There’s plenty of seafood, plus some beef and lamb, and even a few burgers and flatbreads. Their famous dessert is Caramel Miranda, carried over from chef-owner Mark Ellman’s former Lahaina restaurant, Avalon. But my favorite dessert is the lilikoi tart.
I classify Mala in my “Expensive” category of Maui restaurants, based on the prices of the full-size entrees. But you can turn Mala into a Moderate or even Inexpensive restaurant if you just order one of the “First Courses” or Flatbreads. My favorite item on the whole menu is a First Course called Ahi Bruschetta. See below for some specific Mala menu items as well as photos.
You can’t get any closer to the ocean than this, for fine dining in Lahaina. The same chef-owner has a similar restaurant next door called Honu.
