About Hana Kai

Hana is a small town on the east end of Maui, at the end of the famous “Road to Hana.” By far the best-known hotel in Hana is the Hana-Maui Resort formerly know as Travaasa and before that the Hotel Hana. This resort is big and expensive. If you are looking for a more reasonably priced smaller hotel to stay at in Hana, then a good choice is the Hana Kai Maui.

This hotel has just 20 rooms, including studios, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units, in two buildings. It was built in 1972 and has been kept up well. All units have kitchens and ocean views (some better views than others). The view of the black sand beach and Hana Bay from many of the rooms is outstanding. The adjacent Waikaloa Beach is a great place to watch the sunrise. You won’t get all the amenities of an expensive luxury resort, but Hana Kai Maui has lush tropical grounds, a beachside barbecue, daily maid service, free parking, and a koi pond, and it is in an excellent location. There are no elevators, so you have to walk up the stairs to the units that are on the second floor.

Most people drive the road to Hana from their hotel on one of Maui’s sunny beach areas and drive back again, all on the same day. They are in such a rush that they miss many of the sights along the way, the sights in Hana, and the sights beyond Hana, such as Oheo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools) and Lindbergh’s grave. Staying a couple of nights in Hana, such as here at the Hana Kai Maui, gives you more time to enjoy all of the sights of the east half of the island.
