Kahului, Maui

Kahului is home to Airport & Big Box Stores

Kahului is the biggest city on Maui, with a population of about 27,000 people.  It’s where you will arrive at the main Maui airport, but it’s not where you want to stay on your Maui vacation.

Kahului is in the north part of Maui’s central valley, about 30 to 45 minutes drive from the main tourist areas of Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kihei, and Wailea.  It is the only place on Maui where you will find the big box stores: Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, Lowe’s, and others.  Maui’s largest shopping center, the Queen Kaahumanu Center (including Macy’s), is in Kahului.  Two of Maui’s three movie theaters are in this city.  Kahului is also home to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.  The harbor in Kahului is the only port where big container ships can dock at the shore, so this is where most shipments of all types of goods arrive on Maui.  The Maui county government offices are in the adjacent city of Wailuku.

In my opinion, the best three restaurants in Kahului are Bistro CasanovaTin Roof, and Marco’s Grill & Deli.  I do not recommend that you stay at any of the few small hotels in Kahului because they are far from the best beaches and restaurants, and tourist activities.
