Lahaina Banyan Tree

Famous Banyan Tree in Lahaina

There is only one banyan tree in Banyan Tree Park in the middle of Lahaina.  But it is the largest banyan tree in the United States and one of the largest in the world.  Lahaina’s giant banyan tree is 60 feet high and 200 feet wide, filling most of the block that makes up Banyan Tree Park on Front Street, behind the Lahaina Harbor.

The park benches under the banyan tree are a great place to relax in the shade, watching the Maui tourists and residents walk by.  You can meet artists displaying and selling their art under the tree on many weekends.  Kids love to run around under this huge tree.

Banyan Tree History

This banyan tree was 8 feet tall when it was imported from India.  It was planted in 1873 by William Owen Smith, then the sheriff of Maui who worked in the adjacent courthouse.  That old courthouse still stands, and there you can visit an art gallery and the Lahaina Visitor’s Center, where you can pick up the free booklet “Maui Historical Walking Guide.”

Good places for an inexpensive meal across the street from the banyan tree are Cool Cat Cafe and Pioneer Inn.
