Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice is the best shave ice on Maui. It is a small open-air stand, set back from the street a few steps in a courtyard, at 819 Front Street, just north of Cheeseburger in Paradise, in Lahaina. Phone 808-609-5678.

Shave ice, often mistakenly called shaved ice, is a Hawaiian treat that is similar to a snow cone. You can buy shave ice at several places in Lahaina and all over Maui, as well as on all of the other Hawaiian islands. But most places make the shave ice with thick chunks of ice covered in sugary syrup that tastes more like sweet than like fruit. Ululani's Shave Ice is one of the few places for you to get shave ice made with thinly shaven ice that instantly melts in your mouth. But it is the flavoring, not the ice, that has made Ululani's famous. There are 36 flavors to choose from. The flavor toppings that are poured generously over your shave ice at Ululani's are made from real fruit and your can even see the fruit pulp in many of the syrups. Instead of being loaded with sugar and all tasting similar, each of the flavors here tastes like the real fruit that it is made of. Yummy!

You can have up to three flavors on one shave ice at Ululani's. You can also add ice cream under the shave ice, or cream or shredded coconut on top of the shave ice.

In spite of the fact that they don't sell anything but carry-out shave ice at Ululani's, so it might not even be considered by some to be an actual restaurant, this is the only shave ice place listed in the book "Top Maui Restaurants." And even more amazing, Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice is the top-rated restaurant on Maui on the Trip Advisor website.
