Honu Seafood & Pizza Honu Seafood & Pizza opened in 2011, next door to Mala, at 1295 Front Street in Lahaina. Phone 808-667-9390. Honu is the Hawaiian word for turtle, referring to the turtles you can sometimes see from the oceanfront tables. The restaurant has sunset views, a live tank of crustaceans, and a brick oven to cook Naples-style thin-crust pizzas. There are about 100 seats. Open seven days per week for lunch and dinner. The menu includes many unusual-for-Maui items, such as oysters, clams, pigs ears, and octopus, as well as the more common burgers, salads, and fresh fish entrees. All are delicious. For especially great service at dinner, ask for Anna or Gerri to be your server. Honu is owned and run by Maui chef Mark Ellman, one of the originators of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. He previously originated and ran Avalon (1987-1998), Penne Pasta Cafe (started 2001, now under different ownership), Mala Ocean Tavern (2005-present), and Mala Wailea (2008-present). For excellent unusual food, a beautiful close-up ocean view, and friendly service, Honu is one of Lahaina's best restaurants.
