How to Vacation on Maui Without Renting a Car

Although the best way to see all of Maui is to rent a car for your entire vacation, there are good reasons why some people prefer not to have a car while they are on Maui.  Rental cars are expensive, plus you have to pay for gas, insurance, and parking. People under 25 years old either cannot get rental cars or have to pay an extra fee.  People who have been to Maui many times have already seen the sights, so they may just want to spend their time at the pool or the beach at their hotel or condo.  So if you want the best prices on Maui car rentals, see this link:  Maui Car Rental Discount Prices.  But if you don’t want to rent a car on Maui, continue reading this page to learn about other transportation choices.

Getting to and from the airport

Airport shuttle vans are usually less expensive than a taxi. Call Speedi Shuttle 877-242-5777, and tell them what hotel you are staying at and how many people are in your traveling family.  Ask their price from the airport to your hotel or condo and make a reservation.

Bus service to other parts of Maui

Maui has very limited bus service.  But depending on where you are staying, you can often get a bus to take you to grocery stores or to other shopping or to some restaurants.  Buses do not go to most sightseeing locations.  The following page has links to each of Maui’s bus routes:  Maui bus routes.

Where to stay so  you can walk

If you are not going to rent a car on Maui, I suggest you stay in one of the following three areas, so that you will be within walking distance of some restaurants and some shopping:  central Kihei, inside the town of Lahaina, or on Kaanapali Beach.  Sections of Maui are explained on the following page:  Where to stay in Maui – West vs South Maui hotels & condos.

Taxis, Uber, Lyft

There are a few taxi companies on Maui, but they are expensive if you go more than a few miles.  If you are on the south side (Kihei, Wailea) call Kihei Taxi 808-298-1877 or the Taxi of Kihei 808-879-5999.  If you are on the west side (Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kahana, Napili, Kapalua) call West Maui Taxi 808-661-1122 or Aloha Maui Taxi 808-661-5432. Uber and Lyft are also available on Maui, and they are usually cheaper than a taxi.

Tour vans and Private Guides

The best way to see the sights of Maui without driving a rental car is to take an organized van tour.  For suggested sights to see and a comparison of the differences between various tour van companies, see Maui Guided Van Tours.

You can hire a private guide who will take you to any Maui sights of your choice in their own car, without you needing to rent a car.  Learn more about private Road to Hana Tours and Haleakala Tours.
