Makena State Park

Maui’s Largest Undeveloped Beach

Big Beach at Makena State Park is Maui’s largest, widest, and longest undeveloped beach. It’s about 3/4 of a mile long and has no hotels, condos, or other buildings anywhere along the beach or adjacent park.

Big Beach is near the south end of Maui.  To get there, take Route 31 south, past Kihei, and past Wailea.  After you pass the Makena Beach Resort (former Maui Prince Hotel) on your right, then continue about one more mile, and watch for signs on the right for any of the three parking lots of Makena State Park.  Park in any of those lots and walk out to the beach.  Click for Map of Maui.

When you are standing on Big Beach, facing the ocean, on your left (south) in the distance you can see Maui’s last lava flow extending out into the ocean.  On your right (north), at the end of Big Beach, you can see the hill you would have to cross over to reach Little Beach (Maui’s unofficial nude beach).  Straight out in the ocean, you can see the islands of Kahoolawe and Molokini.
