Aloha,

The tsunami that hit Japan one week ago today, also hit the Hawaiian Islands, though much less severely.  I have been flooded with emails asking me how much damage the tsunami caused on Maui.  So I am sending out this special issue of the Maui Newsletter to give you a report.

Maui had several hours warning of the tsunami's arrival, so hotels and condos evacuated, at least the lower floors.  Waves up to 9 feet high hit some parts of Maui.  Some hotels and condos got ocean water and sand in first floor lobbies and rooms.  Several low roads were temporarily closed.  The most interesting thing visually, was to see the ocean water recede before the waves came in, exposing the coral and the ocean floor near many beaches.
