Aloha,
Last month's Maui Newsletter offer of a free dessert at Plantation House was our most popular article ever, and you can still get that
dessert coupon at this link. Readers are interested in less expensive restaurants and condos too, so we'll be covering a couple of them in this issue. Below is also the first of an occasional series of articles about people on Maui, called "It's Who You Know." Whether you have already been to Maui, are planning a Maui vacation, or are just dreaming about Maui, there will be something for you in every monthly issue. Please forward this Maui Newsletter to a friend, or tell your friends to sign up for their own copies using the signup button adjacent to the menu on the
Maui Vacations website. Email your comments and suggestions to jon@mauihawaii.org .

Kahana Reef budget condo
Where can you stay on Maui if your budget is low? Kahana Reef is one answer. This condo has 88 units in one 4-story building, constructed in 1974, but kept in good condition. It is on the ocean, but one reason for the low price is that it has no beach, just a stone wall drop-off. There is no air conditioning. You can drive 5 minutes to nearby beaches, grocery stores, and restaurants. It's on West Maui, about 20 minutes drive north of Lahaina.
Prices at Kahana Reef range from about $130 to $200 per night, depending on season and room size (studio or one or two bedrooms).

Eskimo Candy in Kihei
Eskimo Candy is the best inexpensive restaurant in Kihei. Most people carry out from here, but they do have a small number of indoor and outdoor tables. Their fish tacos and their fish and chips are the best I have had anyplace.
This small restaurant is tucked out of the way at the corner of Wai Wai and Halekuai, a couple blocks inland from the main roads of Kihei, so you'll have to check your map or ask anyone who lives or works in Kihei for directions. Entrees are $8 to $13, including plates and platters of fish, shrimp, wraps, pastas, and burgers.

It's Who You Know: Kay Ryan
Why would I be talking about a travel agent, when everyone books their own vacations on the internet these days? Because Kay Ryan is a travel agent who lives on Maui, knows Maui, and gives personal service unlike any other travel agent. No other travel agent knows so much about every Maui hotel and condo and activity choice, spends so much time to find the best place on Maui for your personal needs and budget, and meets with you in person on Maui after you arrive to answer your questions and make sure everything works as planned. A couple weeks ago I interviewed Kay for this newsletter.
Jon: What services do you provide for Maui visitors? Kay: I help people plan their vacations to Maui. I can arrange for air, rooms, car, island activities. Basically I am a travel agent and their concierge all rolled into one person. Jon: How are your services different from other travel agents? Kay: I try to focus on the island of Maui as the main destination as I am here and this is what I know best. When you contact me, I will be there to assist you in planning your vacation. I am here in Maui when you are here and will meet with you to personally answer your questions and set up your activities. You always get the same person, me. You never have to start over to explain who you are, what your plans are, I am the only agent and I keep really good notes. Your home travel agent does not know every hotel and condo on Maui, and the best deals on Maui, like I do. Jon: How much does it cost to use your service? Kay: It does not cost anything extra to use my services. I earn a commission on most everything I book for you. And some things I do, I don't earn anything. I just like to make sure you are having a great time on your vacation.
