The new owners are offering an all-inclusive rate (American Plan) for accommodations, meals, spa treatments, and activities. This will make Hana's only hotel even more expensive. This luxury hotel is the only major hotel in the small town of Hana, on the rainy east coast of Maui. It is at least a 3 hour drive from the main resort areas of Maui in Kaanapali or Kihei. People stay at Travaasa Hana (formerly called Hotel Hana Maui) when they want to be far away from the crowds, but still have resort-style amenities. The Hotel Hana Maui (now called Travaasa Hana) was built in 1946, and expanded in subsequent years. It was originally called the Hana Ranch Hotel. It has only 69 rooms, but all are large. There are Garden Suites and Sea Ranch Cottages. The cottages are luxurious, having large living areas with high ceilings, large bathrooms, skylights, wet bar, dining table, and a large lanai. But in an effort to make your stay more relaxing, the rooms do not have TV sets. Access to this part of Maui from Central Maui (Kahului where the airport is located) is via the Hana Highway. This is a narrow winding mountain road that is famous for its beautiful views and its difficult driving. Most people just drive the Road to Hana to see the scenery, and then turn back and return to the main parts of Maui the same day. If you want more time to see the sights around Hana, then staying a couple nights at the Hotel Hana Maui is the way to do it. Sights in the area include the black sand beach at Waianapanapa, the beautiful beach at Hamoa, the Seven Sacred Pools at Oheo Gulch in Kipahulu, the Heiau at Piilanihale, and Charles Lindbergh's grave at Palapala Hoomau Church.
